DESCRIPTION:

Passiflora lehmanni is a Colombian species that grows in mountain regions where cool air and constant humidity suit it perfectly. It is a slender, discreet plant, free of excess yet endowed with a subtle elegance that reveals itself in the details.

In its natural environment, it lives in the montane forests of south-western Colombia, between 1,500 and 2,200 metres of altitude, where it climbs lightly among shrubs and small trees, supported by its thin tendrils. The leaves, matte green and delicate in texture, are trilobed, with narrow and elongated lobes that recall bird footprints on sand. The overall appearance of the plant is harmonious and light, perfectly in tune with the shaded and humid habitat it prefers.

The flowers are small and measured, reaching only about four centimetres in diameter. The corolla is white, simple and bright, while the corona shows, in the basal part of the filaments, a dark pink colour that enlivens the whole with a gentle yet distinct contrast. The fruits, small and oval, rarely develop in cultivation but are rather common in its natural range, where they are said to have a slightly acidic taste appreciated by local fauna.

I cultivated it for a period and managed to photograph it, but it is not an easy species to find in Europe. It dislikes heat and struggles to adapt to conditions too different from those of its native habitat. In my case, it stayed with me for only a short time, and once lost, I was never able to find it again.

For those wishing to try growing it, a well-ventilated, shaded and humid environment is essential, avoiding excessive heat. It grows well in a temperate greenhouse or a bright veranda, provided that temperatures remain moderate even in summer. This is a species that requires constant care and very precise environmental conditions, but its understated elegance and rarity reward the effort of those who succeed in cultivating it.
