DESCRIPTION:
Passiflora jilekii was described by Heinrich Wawra von Fernsee in 1863 and was most probably dedicated to August von Jilek, a physician and officer in the Austro-Imperial Navy who collaborated with Archduke Maximilian during scientific expeditions in Brazil. The species originates from the south-eastern region of the country, between the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, where it grows at the edges of humid forests, in shady environments constantly moistened by the understorey humidity.
It is a slender and flexible liana with glabrous stems and moderate growth, capable of entwining the surrounding vegetation with a light, graceful habit. The leaves are trilobed and thin, with narrow, elongated lobes ending in an acute apex and a smooth surface of uniform pale green. Overall, the plant has an orderly and harmonious appearance, devoid of excessive vigour yet marked by subtle elegance.
The flower, pendulous and medium-sized, is of almost pure whiteness. The white corolla, sometimes touched by faint greenish reflections, opens into thin and regular petals. The corona is formed by white filaments arranged in several series, long and slender, curving gracefully downwards and giving the flower a pure, transparent look. The androgynophore, of a delicate pink hue, introduces the only touch of colour, discreetly breaking the uniformity of white. The whole, in its simplicity, possesses a balanced refinement that distinguishes it from any related species. The fruit is small and elliptical, pale yellow when ripe, with light brown seeds and a reticulated surface.
In cultivation, Passiflora jilekii is rare and little known. It requires shaded and humid conditions with good air circulation and moderate temperatures, avoiding both heat and cold extremes. It is a delicate species of great ornamental value, a small jewel among the tropical white passionflowers.
